It is the referee who must decide on and then establish the standard. at Junior developmental games, the coach may want you to set a high standard to develop his/her team. On occasions talk to the coaches - e.g.Choose a level that the best players can reach on the day.Use your experience ( if you know players can attain a high standard, take that into account ).Watch the players during the warm up - especially the setters who have the most technically demanding task.You should set the standard for the better team, but when the less able team gets behind on the scoresheet, you can relax on the weaker team, but you need to keep the standard up for the better team. We want both teams to enjoy the game of volleyball. This situation raises another problem for the 1 st official: the correct standard for the better team is too high and not attainable for their opposition. It should be a standard that both all teams can aspire to and achieve. So both playing teams and the Officiating Team need to be considered when setting the standard. Too low for the players and they will get sloppy with their play, and annoyed with the play you allow the by the opposition.Too high for the players and they and spectators will not enjoy the game - you will be blowing the whistle all the time.Too low and you could get bored and may suddenly wake up and call at a high level - inconsistency. ![]()
